I ran across you website while trying to do some Genealogy research on my Great -grandparents who resided in Saltville, Va. in the early to middle 1800's. I was totally taken away with the stories and controversies that surround that area of the country. We have our problems here but not to the extent I have read about there. We too had a "Porn Shop" hit town last year and we have been besieged by church groups protesting in front of the store and our city council trying to find a way to get rid of it. The drug problem is moderate, not the extent of your area however. We too have unemployment due to the 2,000 layoffs when two aluminum plants closed 4 years ago. And our town is becoming a service industry town with Walgreens being opened soon and a Home Depot opening last year. I sympathize with you. The way people talk here, we are the only one with problems..HUH. I wish more people would build sites like yours, it opens the eyes to the real world around us.

I have read your page and some of the comments that are on this web sight and i disagree about a lot of it. I do agree that some schools have their bullies and the kids that get picked on. they also have teachers that just work there because it's a job but some teachers really do like what they do. All these bad things are happening to Sullivan County schools like money problems and the usual bullies. the only reason teachers ask for a raise is because the aren't being paid enough. We kids have to worry about school closings and parents getting aggravated about the way teachers act. It's just to much pressure. I think we should join together and try to stand up for our schools.

I stumbled onto this site after I did a yahoo search for local civil rights meetings in the area. This is a great site it gives insightful and useful information, and portrays a very realistic view of life in this community. I thoroughly enjoyed it I laughed, I was angered, bottom line I was moved it spurred me on toward my goal. Which is hopefully person by person to enlighten the community or at least make it able to have a freedom of speech in this town. Which is very hard to get to do if you don't have the general mind set of the rest of the community. Thank you so much for helping me realize that I am not the only free thinker around. Thanks.

just posted but I wanted to add just a few more things. As I read down through the posts on the bullitan board, a thought came to me. For some reason the christians that seem to be writing in seem awfully defensive, do they not know that no one is attacking them. This site is simply an act of our 1st amendment right. Certainly you all realize that you are the majority in this community? No need to try to preach to the sinner and non believers, we have heard it all before. So I am going to have to quote Rodney on this "Can't we all just get along?"

You have excellent, opinionated yet fair religious viewpoints. I was raised in a moderate form of Methodism that was Bible-centered, tolerant, suspicious of extremes, liberal in social activism and conservative in Christology, I never imagined that the fundamentalist right would consider me some kind of heretic or apostate, my venerable American denomination scoffed at by nitwits like Pat Robertson. Years ago I recognized that the these dominionists were playing with neo-paganism, and that their ends justified their means.

I am a concerned parent with a lot of issues about BCMS. I think that the school has great teachers and my child has only had one problem in the past two years with the art teacher ( and I think everyone has a problem with her attitude ). The office workers have to be the rudest , most unprofessional , cold hearted people I have every dealt with. There have been several complaints on the office workers trying to take matters into their own hands without consulting with the principal.

If a parent has a problem with anything with the school you better believe everyone here is about it thanks to them. That sounds to me like that is breaking a privacy law and something should be done to stop that. It makes me sick at my stomach to think that once my child is leaving there I have another one coming up. I would not recommend anyone moving into the Bluff City area without taking the schools into consideration. I do not consider myself a trouble maker at all, I am just concerned and fed up with the way they treat people and get away with it. I think the principal should look into that and take some action. I have worked in customer service type areas for years and still do, and I would never treat people like that! Thank You Concerned Parent fed up with unfair treatments!

State street's new adult bookstore....

Although I do not like the idea of "adult bookstores" or the smut they peddle I find it extremely funny that one mans business has caught the city so off guard and sent them scurrying to find a solution. I guess I would side with the smut peddler on this one. He played the game fare and square and won. I hate the thought of him being there but the point is he got there legal and sense he did nothing wrong to gain the right to be there the city should leave him alone. His business is a stain on how our city manages itself and now the city must wear that scarlet letter.

I think it stinks that we will see that store there but like I said, he played a fare game and held nothing back, the city just simply "dropped the ball". If it were one of us and things were turned around the other way in the cities favor you can bet you ass they wouldnt budge an inch. So the city should be good sports about it and learn from their mistakes, meanwhile we will just have to walk on the other side of the street and pretend not to see our cities "Scarlet Letter".

quite an impressive website! You seem to be quite accomplished in your efforts. Too bad you can't take more of the time wasted in this effort and transfer it to your other community efforts (i.e. - tutoring, etc.) Good luck I hope to see you on Judgment Day in heaven!

Response: I already do tutoring and help people obtain GEDs. I'm also an advocate at present for displaced tenants at a trailer park. As for wasted time, that isn't what the LA Times, Richmond Times Dispatch, the Bristol Herald Courier, and Kingsport Times-News thought when they quoted me and/or this website. Take a good loo at the article listed above on a local trailer court. Those are the people I stand for, not people like you. As to judgment day, be glad that Hell is a myth because a whole bunch of Sullivan County hypocrites will be joining me for a big cookout.

Some of us Native American people are Christian and some are not. I am not one to push any belief I have toward another and frankly I don't see what it hurts for students to say prayer in schools or recognize God during their school hours. My children are set in the traditions of my people and no man can ever take that from them and far as the HATE GROUPS , these people should should get a life and stop the jealousy they have for other peoples. Here's something for them to argue about I am native American therefore I pay no taxes and I am sure a few hate groups have visited our casino and gave ME a little of their money. May the Creator keep you!

Webmaster response: May the Creator keep you as well! My mother's family is part Cherokee and all of them were either Baptist or "Holy Rollers" both which I consider fine people when they act like Christians. These Jerry Falwells, Pat Robertsons, and their followers don't represent them or God. Like the ACLU and many of these extreme Leftists, they are all driven by a political agenda suger coated with civil rights or God.

But you and Brian below are confused on the issues here. First of all in VA and TN schools children have the right to pray during school hours, have Bible Clubs, etc. which I strongly support. That's the law. What they can't do is bully or single out other children or disrupt class. See My response to a Christian.

You are a religious bigot, the Southern Baptist Convention is not a hate group. You need to visit SBC.net and find out what we're preaching- we're certainly not attaching anyone. The issue is what is truth. You can label Christian groups with negative names but it boils down to one question- the question Pilate had for Jesus -what is truth?
