This is a great site. I've been searching for truth for years, but can't find it in organized religion...so much of it makes no sense to me. Deism makes perfectly good sense. Unfortunately, I can't stay away from here and stay up way late at night reading. Can you suggest any good books on Deism that I can read in bed, or do I need to buy a laptop? Thanks!

I'm a bit perplexed as to why your very interesting site STEERS CLEAR of 'hot-button' issues usually fanned by the squirrely Arch-Conservative ilk. We all know the subject matter. It usually comes down to the Right trying to Lord-Over ordinary peoples private lives. Especially homosexuals. Otherwise a really good set of readings. The main reason I don't is we have so little local material on this. People tend to stay in the closet for fear of what will happen. If anyone has material on this to submit on this or any other subject I'll turn it into a webpage and post. I won't accept anything that's just personal attacks or foul language. L. Loflin

As for Catholics, my dad was Catholic (Mon Baptist), I think they are nice people. They don't sit around waiting for a rapture any day. Many mainline Protestant churches are OK as well. The problem is kooky cult churches and political extremists such as some Southern Baptist.

Check out this article in the Maryville, TN Daily Times. http://www.thedailytimes.com/sited/story/html/134372 I was born and raised a Baptist, Scare tactics like this were used on me in my youth. Anyone remember the "Hell" tapes that were used in the 70's to scare the shit out of kids so they would become Christians? Anyway I converted to Cathloicism about 6 years ago and I have felt so much love, peach, and happiness in just 6 years than I ever felt as a Baptist. However, since my eye opening conversion myself and my family have been shuned, argued with, and just about told that we were going straight to hell because of our faith. Not all Catholics are perfect nor are Baptist or any other religion. My gripe is being harrassed because I chose to be "different" than the other local yokles.

I have heard all the news, just like last year in the local paper Sullivan County threatened to stop transportation to and from schools for students. They also hinted that more school would be closed that actually were. They like to use scare tactics to get voters to lean their way. I am not for anyone loosing their job at all and I would hate to be on that end, but I know for a fact that the school cop at Central is as useless as tits on a bull, she does NOT intimidate any student there. So maybe that is a good cut. I don't think the answer is to cut sports, if we do then those kids are going to possibly turn into the little punk asses we are sick of now that are actually to damn lazy to play a sport. Sports are a good thing, even if I had to fork over more money I would be in favor of keeping that.

If any of you locals have been watching the news lately, O'Dell has stated that the 2003-2004 school year will be the worst year in regards with the budget. $3,000,000 is needed for the Sullivan County School System. They have decided to cut out Student Resource Officers, which are the school cops. Also, they have decided to cut all driver's ed classes, and several secretariel positions. As I commented to Mr. Loflin in a recent email, it is frightening to know that students will not be educated on roads and driving skills. Thus, I'm sure that we will hear of many more accidents on our roads. Not to mention that there won't be a school cop in our high schools. They're are already enough punks in them, and this certainly won't help things. Why not cut out other programs, like sports?! What are they thinking? It IS a shame.

The religious right is a corporate funded fascist front. The funders are hypocrites and the followers are fools and victims of the lies. The "christian" leaders such as Pat "death squad funder" Robertson rake in the bucks and tell their followers to vote for the oligarchy that loots them. "The Christian God is a three headed monster, cruel, vengeful, and capricious. If one wishes to know more of this raging, three headed beast-like god, one only needs to look at the caliber of people who say they serve him. They are always of two classes: fools and hypocrites".

David: You are correct about Sullivan South. I've been trying to find out what the drop-out rates for these schools are and will add it to the page. The stats may look better because many problem kids could have been forced out, etc. The data on the official website doesn't look right to me and I plan to visit school officials.

As to Harry Potter books, this fundamentalist Christian reaction is absurd. It's harmless fantasy and fun just like Halloween. Some fundies want that banned as well. They have this fantasy that Harry Potter, Halloween, and evolution is why their churches are empty. Everyone I know that rejects their position is because of the crap they found in the churches. That not say we don't have some good churches but those that whine have other motives. There are plenty of rational and decent Christian people out there, but these nutcases and control freaks are hurting all Christians.

I would like to comment on the Harry Potter controversy. On the Bristonews.com website there is a poll vote on weather or not you thing Harry Potter is good for children. Right now 50% of poll shows a NO. I have four children between 4 and 15. I have seen both movies and read 4 of the books myself. I see nothing "devilish" or "witchcraftish" about it. There are a lot of people in this area; Bristol, Blountville, and Kingsport that like to use religion as a control device. How many of us watched Bewitched or I dream of Jeanie as a child. Do we worship the Devil. I don't think so. I will not name the denomination or group that likes to stur up stupid shit. I am a Christian and I am flat sick of anyone who tries to denounce "everything" that may be fun or different in the name of GOD. It's ok not to like Harry Potter, but to say it is Evil is stupid. Take Halloween for example; as a child I never thought of the Devil or witchcraft when I put on a scary face and went for my candy. Now it is shouted from the roof tops, "it's the Devil's Day, blah blah. Weak minds try to ruin fun for everyone. Get a life people. If you look at things in a good way it would sure help and stop listening to these cotton haired, polester suit fools who don't really know the bible.

Hi, I read the page that Shanda typed and am utterly stunned. I have encountered no problems with any of the teachers at Sullivan North to this awful extent. I have, however, had a few problems with one or two of the teachers. I find this situation hard to believe, however, I would still like to get in contact with SHANDA SAMPSON. If anyone has any idea how I can contact her, please email me and let me know. Thank you.

The term "Palestine" came from the name that the conquering Roman Empire gave the ancient Land of Israel in an attempt to obliterate and de-legitimize the Jewish presence in the Holy Land. The name "Palestine" was invented in the year 135 C.E. Before it was known as Judea, which was the southern kingdom of ancient Israel. The Roman Procurator in charge of the Judean-Israel territories was so angry at the Jews for revolting that he called for his historians and asked them who were the worst enemies of the Jews in their past history. The scribes said, "the Philistines." Thus, the Procurator declared that Land of Israel would from then forward be called "Philistia" [further bastardized into "Palaistina"] to dishonor the Jews and obliterate their history. Hence the name "Palestine." Click here to continue the debate on the mythical Palestine.

i can tell you why our schools are in chaos, Lewis. it isn't just because of money either. we have so many teachers that are inexperienced and have no concern for the students in their classes. it's just like the four students that got left behind at Dollywood a couple of weeks ago. one thing's for sure and that's one way to get rid of students. you cannot convince me that it was a simple mistake. if that is a mistake then i'd really hate to know what else the teachers do. o'dell seems to want to get to the bottom of this incident but it's summer! I'm sure that this too, will go unnoticed. then you have these students that do nothing but raise cane in the classroom and in the halls. the adults in the school are afraid to take proper action against them. what our schools need is a PADDLE and teachers that care and know what's going on with who. anymore it's only a paycheck. When my daughter was a freshman in high school she was pushed down a set of stairs and was injured. she went to the main office to call me but I was not home. while she stood there bleeding, the person in the office told her to just suck it up and go to class. after i took her to the doctor, she had fractured her leg. you can imagine what i did. i got to the bottom of it. in my opinion o'dell needs to leave. his time should have been up four years ago. it was his bright idea that if a students misses no more than two days in one semester of high school, that student is exempt from the exams. now, if these students get sick they should try to come to school anyway, because if they don't miss more than two days they won't have to take their exams. it doesn't matter that their germs are spread around the whole school but what's important is that they are exempt. these students NEED to take exams because if they have plans on going to a college they won't get that choice, and they won't be prepared for reality. then there is all of the racism in the schools. if you are black, hispancic, mixed, asian, chinese, purple, blue, whatever, you are automatically an outcast and you will be the target for hate UNLESS you are a top notch athlete. then, everyone will have something to do with you. it seems that the only way for people to like you in these schools is if you're an athlete. it's no wonder there's no money to support education it all goes to the athletes. i used to be an active parent but anymore i'd assume to just take a beating as to go to my daughter's school.

I know a lot of people say, "if you don't like the area, then move". That is easier said then done. I have lived in the same house for 37 years. My neighborhood has turned into a nightmare of burgularies and harassement from neighbors that moved in about 6 years ago from Ohio. Just yesterday two female adults come onto my porch and threatened to kill my kids. All because they said I called the police on them for letting their small children play in the road. I was at work at the time this supposedly happened and I don't care where their children play. Anyway, the Sullivan County Sherrifs Office said it is MY duty to file a warrent. They could do NOTHING. It is all so political. I went to the Bristol court house to serve this warrent and was treated like I was diseased. Those were the rudest people I have ever seen in my life. It still has not been done. They tell me I have to bring my daughter up there to file the warrent. So To all the people out there, If you want to rob someone go ahead do it. If the policy don't see you then your ok. The stupid bitches even had my possession and the policy did not arrest them.

I used to live in the tri-cities area, and while I resided in that area, my family and I experienced things that we had never imagined could happen. I would not wish for my worst enemy to live there. My children came home almost each day from school telling me of the awful things that went on at school. My husband was laid off of his job, after only two months of being employed. I searched endlessly for a job myself, and almost the only 'job' to be found is only minimum wage. I'm glad to be out of that area and I think that the word should be spread as far as possible. People that might have plans to reside in that area may think twice.

Interesting website. I came here after doing a "Google" search on Christian fundamentalism. One thing that seems to go unnoticed (probably on purpose) is the number of people who possess that special kind of faith. They're not interested in politics and power. Whether they're Muslim, Jewish or Christian, they understand what it's all about, loving their fellow man. No doubt evil exists, no doubt fundamentalism can be harmful but I scratch my head wondering how a supposedly modern society still has to label and categorize people as ignorant based on thier faith tradition. Ah well, the beat goes on.

I'd really like to know where all of the money went that the sullivan county board of education had. The local newspaper stated that the BOE has asked for $3,000,000 for the 2003/04 fiscal year. That's alot of money and I'd like to know what they're doing with it other then spending it on faculty's kids. I used to go to South and I know that the faculty would steal the school's money. I seen it happen three times but I never said anything because i knew it would do no good. yea you should have an article about the schools!!

I know of things about sullivan county schools that would send chills up your spine. Both of my kids are enrolled in that school system and they have both begged me to transfer them. Next year, I am going to transfer them into the city schools. I get so sick of hearing about how bad their school is and I get sick of putting of with their teacher's un-caring attitudes. It's high time we let this county know what we think. I'm also tired of paying my taxes to support these schools. They do not deserve my hard earned money. What about these administrators that are sending THEIR kids on vacation with MY money? I do not work to support THEIR kids, but mine. My kid's teachers are nothing but liars there for a paycheck and that's all. They don't care that they aren't teaching. As long as they get that monthly paycheck in their mailbox, that's all that matters. Mr. John O'Dell needs to wake up and take a look at all of these parents that are speaking out. He needs to go into each school, especially the high schools, and carefully observe what goes on. I don't think he cares either. If he did his schools wouldn't be in the shape that there in and there wouldn't be so many people complaining.

This girl never goes to school and is on probation for other roberys. I was told by a person at social services. That what I am saying to her is "hear Say". Unless I am in the home at the time the mother passes out it is just hear say. Well I am at work while this slug sleeps/ passes out. WE support this. This woman is younger than me and makes more money than me setting home. The only medical problem I can tell she has is she is fat. She walks around our neighborhood with a big cigerette hanging from her lips and he belly hanging out. I am to tired when I come home to priss around my neighbrhood. I guess venting on here helps.

Yes, teachers are afraid of the kids, but the teachers didn't raise them. I am not a perfect parent by any means and my opinion of parenting comes from what I see around me. No good oxygen thief parents on SSI and Food stamps that let thier kids run wild. I see this in the area I live which is in the Central High school district. Every Kid that is a trouble maker at Central comes from a home where they are are not made to follow rules. Once the teacher gets them at 14 or 15 years of age They can't do a thing with them. These kids were never taught respect. That comes from a parent or guardian. Also, these kids have the choice if they want to be a good person or a bad person. If they see their parents being drug addicts and drunks and getting a check each month without working, then that is what they will do to. These people are breeding our next generation of worthess people. Sure teachers they are going to be afraid of them. A 15 year old girl and her mother robbed my house on May the 19th. Because no one SAW them, they didn't get arrested. However, they had my belongings. I don't mean to push all the blame on people who need assistance. I blame worthless people who suck off of the hard working people, then are to lazy to raise their kids to be productive citizens.

No, not all of the blame goes out to the parents. Partly, yes, but the majority of blame goes out to these teachers for letting the kids behave this way. I think that teachers are afraid to stand up to these bad kids.

Sullivan North sounds almost worse than Sullivan Central. I hate that our kids are subject to these horrible conditions in the Sullivan County school system. NOT ALL the schools are bad. Bountville Middle, and Elementary are great so is Emmitt!! It is however a shocker to our kids when they leave that wonderful middle school and are thrown into hell at the high schools. Somewhere control is lost. My daugher has been nominated into Who's Who this year, her freshman year. I know she hates with a passion to have to go back to Central. The smart, athletic, and talented kids don't stand a chance against the thugs. What do the parents do??? It is the parents fault for this mess. These kids needed their asses busted a long time ago.

Hello. I was browsing around on the internet tonight and somehow I came to this site. I have spent about 45 minutes just reading through random subjects that I found of interest. I have also read what other localists are saying about the Sullivan County schools. You know something? I can fully understand what others are saying. My son graduated this year from Sullivan North, and thank God that this was his last year in that school system. I have been the type of parent to be involved in EVERYTHING that my son is involved with in school. I've always encouraged my son to participate in not necessarily sports, but in clubs, etc. Although my son did participate in basketball, he was also a member of the National Honor Society. Students began to really get on his nerves because of the things they would do in the classroom that were disturbing to those trying to learn. My son took it upon himself to make the problems known to the principal. Week after week these same students kept doing the same things. Then, I took it upon myself to call the school and find out IF they were going to do something about this group of students. After explaining who I was and what my concern was, I was told that they could do nothing about it, unless it was arranged for my son to be moved into a different class, which would've been a study hall and caused him not to graduate by ONE credit. What about the students that were causing the problems? They were the ones that should've been moved to a different class. My son passed by the skin on his teeth in that class and I was not going to let him repeat again next year. Hell no. In his freshman year at North, a gang tried to jump him in the vocational wing. He had asked to go to the restroom and these thugs were out of the classroom trying to cause trouble. My son reported it to the office, but they told him that they couldn't do a thing about it. The principals and staff don't even take the time out to get names, much less interview these thugs, and try to get to the root of the problems. There was once a time when my son walked into a gym restroom to find two faculty members making out. To my surprise they were opposite sexes. I am glad to see that other parents are speaking their minds about this school system. And by the way, how in the hell can four students get left behind on a field trip?

At sullivan Central, an art teach named Ms. Pack was so afraid of her students that she cried. The students would throw scissors, pencils, and anything else they could get their hands on. This woman who is very nice, but probably should not teach if she can't control her class. Also drug use in the classroom and parking lots. Even with the on school police officrer. Do these people not smell the dope, I don't understand. I really think teachers DO NOT care.

A good friend of mine told me about this site and about all of the stories about the schools. I have several stories that I can tell you and about things that i have seen. I actually happened to know Shanda Sampson and I can tell you that she was a good person and artist. I was in three art classes with her. Her story that is on this website is the truth because I know. I was in that class when all of it happened. Mrs. Thomas was so jealous of her and always talked about her when she left. On with my stories. To me Sullivan north is the worst school that I know of. The teachers that I had could really care less about their students. Racism is a real problem there and so is gangs. I know that alot of the female students brought drugs into the bathrooms and used them. There were times when faculty were in the bathrooms when this happened but they never did anything about it. There is a group of special students with needs at north and most of the students make fun of them. I had teachers that would throw chairs, desks and other things at their class. it really scared us in those class because you never knew if you'd get hit and hurt. Many people said that the principal was gay.i saw alot of bad things happen in that school. students would wonder through the halls and smoke pot and vandalise the school property. Our counselors were all a big joke and knew nothing about us, because one time I went to the guidance office and my guidance counselor called me by a male's name even though I am a female. She didn't even know what grade I was in. Over half of my teachers would just let us sleep wonder off, do drugs and gossip during class time. students probably never told anybody because they didn't care. And then I had one teacher who would give you an a, just for sleeping and doing nothing. you got a d in that class if you actually did anything. her motto was.."If you don't bother me, you get an a." Students would go into the bathrooms and have sex. When I rode the bus my freshman year, there was a guy that burned a whole in one of the seats. I would be glad if you used this.

my daughter just finished her sophomore year at sullivan north high school. not only is she a straight-A student, but she has also been accused of smoking pot IN CLASS. first, let me explain that the teacher's class in which she was accused of smoking the pot in, is an idiot, and the one to SMOKE the pot. after having NO proof whatsoever about my daughter, Salyer decided to suspend my daughter for five days, even though she does not do any type of drugs, and has no idea as to what pot even looks like. i have brought my daughter up to know what's right and wrong. my daughter had never been suspended from school, until we moved to this awful county. i had heard from neighbors about the bad reputation in the sullivan county schools, but as a parent, i didn't want to believe them until my daughter came home each day telling me another story about how the teachers cuss their students, steal from their students, and how the students behave. sadly, the teachers tolerate this behavior. to me, it would be worth the money to send my daughter to a private school. to any parent who may read this: do NOT send your child to a sullivan county school.

Finally, Others are speaking out. There are lots of problems in Sullivan County, Tina is right, our kids are dollar signs. Whatever happened to the investigation of Ward sending his kids to Florida on donations from business. My child is on the Baket ball team. It cost me a fortune for shoes and fees. It is bull shit. I want to know where the money goes. ALso, 5 bucks a person for football games. Four dollars a person for bb games. O and Cheerleading!! What a scam. Plus the coach is a bitch.

Yes, you should feature a section about the Sullivan county school system. As a parent, I am fed up with their bullshit. To them, the only *thing* that my child is to them is a dollar sign, and nothing else. The majority of faculty that my child has had problems with result in the faculty being liars, just to save their own asses. It's very much a shame. My child, along with many others, deserve a much better education than what's "offered" in Sullivan County. I'm sick and tired of hearing about the budget problems, and about teachers being fired for doing stupid shit that actually happens in these schools. Why can't O'Dell see what's happening? Is he THAT blind? Please, make a headline about this. We need to get the word out from people who KNOW. Thank you.

Yes I agree, please bring to light the horrible conidtions in the sullivan county school system. It would be nice to have an undercover cop go in as a student. Or just walk in during one of the lunch periods. It is a zoo and there is no one there protecting the good kids. The teachers dont give a shit and the parents (of the bad kids) dont either. I hate to send my kids there, I really worry that something is going to happen. Why do people from all over the place put the craziest shit on this guestbook. Who cares about false police reports 1000 miles away?

Dear Corning Police Department, Christine Maio and I are sorry that we falsified records against Mr. Caglar Singletary to Officer John Dininny because he made the report firstly and we false reported an incident in another city to keep from being arrested. Caglars story is true and ours is false, did not mean to frame him. Sorry Caglar, a fantasy story. Now, in the Elmira Areas, there is a ceremony where Violence La Allhitler (Empress of Nazism) has invited every person, especiall the poor, the Chemung Jewesses and good persons of the District. It is a time when there is no war, but peace and prosperity, at least for 3.5 years. Violence La AllHitlers does not teach destructive doctrines, but goodness and peacefulness. Everybody present receives some kind of reward, all religious Feminist leaders present hereby; even though Captain Bike (myself) is invited, he does not dare attend as Captain Bike, but as Lion Ego Badd (my everyday alter ego) whereas Potentia does come here as her main alter ego, Traciline Omega although she has various alter egos reason being there is a trap set for the Kemnpo patrol here. Annilies Marie Frank is here too, as is my wife Lore. Violence dubs me as a Knight In Nazism albeit I am not a Nazi, but a Jew whilst at the party, the Klanswomen Nazi girls who follow Violence La Dictatrix salute or worship her, Heil Hitler, the Superior Species, Hail Hitler! because Violence has been promoted to the Role of Fuhreress dues fact Mr. Hitler died spiritually, physiclly, and mentally see.

I need your help spreading this message, I worked as a Medic in Hampton, Virginia from 1988 to 1996. While working there I was ordered by my superiors to delay and withhold care to minorities that called 911 for help causing permanent injuries and in some cases death. On one such case a 1 year old African American male was burnt over 85% of his body with 1st degree burns. I contacted my dispatch for life flight helicopter and it was denied, I was then told to take this child to Hampton General Hospital a type III trauma center just minutes away. When I arrived at this hospital the doctor told me this child needed to be transported to the burn center in Norfolk. I again requested the helicopter and was told there was no way they would transport an African American by air. I was then ordered to transport this critically burned child by ground. Due to the delay in care and lack of intervention by a trained doctor this child died a long painful death. This care in Hampton is typical to all minorities. The state office of Emergency Medical Services refuses to take action against these blatant acts, stating, "there is nothing they can do." Actions such as this falls under their jurisdiction they refuse to act because they are responsible for these actions and could be sued by family members. Please help pass the word on and maybe someone will be located that can and will take action against this corrupted public service. After all it is our tax dollars that fuels this hate. Thanks, John http://www.geocities.com/rescue134577/

Good kids trying to actually get an education are being tormented by the dumb ass population of retarded motherfucking kids who are only concernded about when their parents get that next check and set on their big fat asses and watch good people work. However, they dont take time to watch what their fucked up kids are doing. My home was burgularized 2 weeks ago by a 15 year old and her mother. I hear what you are saying and to get me to read anything outside of a text book during pre finals week it has to be interesting...trust. However, my question to you is why don't you use any biblical references. They are there. Your information sounds good but, for me it is to be taken lightly becuase you do not give any references to your claims...it seems as though you are making an argument from authority... yet, you have none. I think this would have been a better page had you put some type of grounding to your house i.e. where you found that the Pahrisees and the Sadduccees were enemies and is there any historical evidnence to support that. Your giving us a case and expecting the reader to trust that you are not lying, it would be an easier win if you had some undenialbe truth in their somewhere.

I am a lifelong resident of the Tri-Cities area, to say the very least. I was a graduate of the class of 1959 from Dobyns-Bennett High School. I have raised three children, which are now ages 31, 33, and 36. Unlike me, they were graduates from the Sullivan County School System. When my children were attending school, it seemed rare to hear of such careless and vulgar acts nowadays. My grandchildren also attend the Sullivan County School System, ranging from elementary to high school. It blows my mind to hear some of the stories that my grandchildren tell me on an almost daily basis. Both my grandchildren's parents and I have contacted O'Dell, as well as the school prinipals regarding these stories, and we never receive a response. It is as if they could care less about what goes on in "their" school. When the 6:00PM news airs, it seems to me that it almost always involves a topic regarding the county's school budget problems. When I hear from my grandchildren that their classmates are dropping out because of school's environment, it appears that the main problem for the pitfalls of the budget is a lack of students. Do they not realize that "No Students = No Money?" They are forcing the students that they do have into dropping out. Those students are more than likely going to leave the area, in the near future. I also hear disturbing stories about the teachers. As a tax payer, I'd rather MY money NOT be spent on the stupidity of the Sullivan County School System. We are paying for the teachers to teach. Perhaps the teachers need to be awaken, and realize that their jobs have high potential for being cut. O'Dell once reported on the news that "the next thing would be the fine arts, and sports." Excuse me, but I don't really know anyone that attends an educational facility to play sports, and the like. Take ETSU, for example.

Their football program has recently been cut, in order to save money. High school seniors with football scholarships are going to be rather upset. In return, ETSU will more than likely see a smaller percentage of students in the coming school year, only because there is no football to be played. That's pathetic, if you ask me. If you want to play football, go outside into your backyard, and have at it. There is no fee for that. School systems in our area need to focus more on academics, rather than sports. They also need to recognize talent, and if you would consider the ability to run, and throw a ball as a talent, you are out of your mind. I don't support school sports, and I'm not exactly crazy over some of the school system's fine art teachers, either. If anyone ever mentioned the pitfalls of Kingsport, they would have to include the Sullivan County School System. As for me, I am trying to persuade my grown children into enrolling my grandchildren into the city schools. At least they wouldn't have to worry about having some of their academic classes cut. And, at least their faculty would care. I believe that many students, parents, as well as grandparents would agree with me on this one. The Sullivan County School System is for the BIRDS. I'm outraged.

I saw Terri Jo the other day, she rolled out of her trailer about 2 pm with her 4 dirty kids. They just woke up because none of them go to school or work. She was heading to the Food Country in Blountville, Food Stamps in tow. Now Terri's sister still sleeps because she has taken a few to many pills that were bought selling some of the food stamps. These two women are in their 20's ok, have never worked. WE ARE PAYING FOR THEM to lay on their fat asses and eat. Their fucking brats have broke in to my house twice. Of course if the police don't see them, then it's my word againt theirs. So I could take off work and file charges etc. Loose a days pay over it. About this trailer, it is very small and has about 12 people living in it. Kids stand on the porch naked and play in the streets. The neighborhood used to be nice. When you drive around the block you get the middle finger from the 4 year old, the 5 year old moons people. While the lovely young mothers pass out from pills. I called social services, they tell me Im telling them, "hear say". So let the lot lizards suiside on pills and the brats get squashed in the road. I've done all I can do.

NASCAR is Red neck. Country music is Red Neck. I bet 90% of the population in Bristol, TN wouldn't know fine art, music, food, or anything of class if it smacked them in the face. One more reason corporations die and the youth leave. Well now only if one works at a pharmacy or is a doctor that has to take care of the fat, stupid, chain smoking bunch of pigs that occupy this town, then you would be in hog's heaven. There are a few people of class, but most people that live here thump that good book and then screw their neighbor's wife behind closed doors.

This is so far the best site I have read for a well built and developed exploration into fringe Christian fundamentalism. I find it shocking that these people have infiltrated your towns insitutions and infringed so upon your rights. My only complaint must be the repeated attacks on communists. As with Christians, there are those who really are communists and there are those who use it to justify warped beliefs or their own advancement at the expense of others. And as with real Christians, we don't like being lumped into one block. Just for some clarity, the USSR was not communist, neither is China, N. Korea or Cuba. In fact, there has never been a communist country. Anyone who is well read in communism, or simply knows the basic fundamentals of the theory will know that communism is based around extreme democracy, power truely in the hands of the people, and no country has shown signs of that. Additionally, communism cannot happen in one country, but must come about across the world in rapid succession.

Sorry, there were two mistakes in the aforementioed: 1st line: I mean grateful. 7rd line: It reads: Enlightenment. While I am at it: The question often comes up. Did Jefferson favour separation from church and state? He surely did, because he did not like any clergy to make decisions on secular matters. I do recommend anyone to read the book "The godless constitution" by Isaac Kramnick and R.Lawrence Moore.

What a fountain of wisdom has been accumulated for which one can only be greatful. I'm a decendent of an German family close to Unitarian thoughts. The Germans favoured always Thomas Jefferson liberal thoughts and his contribution to the period termed Enlightenment(this also applies to Joseph Priestley). To stay on good terms with our own time one can only be of a dissenting mind. An essay of Jefferson was already printed in the Berlinische Monatsschrift at the close of the 18th Century. To know what Aufklaeung (Enlightenment) means, any reader should have a look at "What is Englightenment" by the philosopher Immanuel Kant. It is very rewarding reading it (it can easily be traced in the German original version but also in a good English in the internet). It surely fits in with the intention of the architect of these fine pages.

The Bible says there is only one way to Heaven Jesus said: "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father but by me." (John 14:6) Good works cannot save you. "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9) Trust Jesus Christ today! Here's what you must do: 1. Admit you are a sinner. "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;" (Romans 3:23) "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:" (Romans 5:12) "If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us." (1 John 1:10) 2. Be willing to turn from sin (repent). Jesus said: "I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish." (Luke 13:5) "And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:" (Acts 17:30) 3. Believe that Jesus Christ died for you, was buried, and rose from the dead. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16) "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners. Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8) "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." (Romans 10:9) 4. Through prayer, invite Jesus into your life to become your personal Saviour. "For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." (Romans 10:10) "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." (Romans 10:13) What to pray: Dear God, I am a sinner and need forgiveness. I believe that Jesus Christ shed His precious blood and died for my sin. I am willing to turn from sin. I now invite Christ to come into my heart and life as my personal Saviour. "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:" (John 1:12) "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." (2 Corinthians 5:17) If you have received Jesus Christ as your Saviour, as a Christian you should: 1. Read your Bible every day to get to know Christ better. "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." (2 Timothy 2:15) "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." (Psalms 119:105) 2. Talk to God in prayer every day. "And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive." (Matthew 21:22) "Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God." (Philippians 4:6) 3. Be baptized, worship, fellowship, and serve with other Christians in a church where Christ is preached and the Bible is the final authority. "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:" (Matthew 28:19) "Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching." (Hebrews 10:25) "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:" (2 Timothy 3:16) 4. Tell others about Christ. "And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." (Mark 16:15) "For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!" (1 Corinthians 9:16) "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek." (Romans 1:16)

I have four children in the Sullivan County School system. My oldest attends Sullivan Central, her first year there has been a nightmare. She is smart and athletic. She and her friends are harrassed every single day by other students, mostly girls. These girls threaten to cut, kill, and beat her up. My children are also harressed because we are Catholic, this only by other students. I have contacted Mr. Ward numerous times. He did pull in the girls that are making the threats, only to add to their fire. It has not stopped. Also the school anual I paid $65.00 for was altered to hurt students and teachers. My point is the teachers and Mr. Ward do nothing to keep order and control in that school. Mr. Ward spends time at the Country Club EATING!! He also likes to line his pockets with money that was donated for athletics. This was on the news a while back, you know, investigation etc. I haven't heard another word on the "accounting" at Sullivan Central. I am afraid that something bad is going to happen at Central, there are wonderful good students there who are treated bad by teachers and other students who have obviously been raised by ignorant parents. The teachers cannot control them, the parents are afraid of them. My daugher was pulled out of her class because 1/2 of her stomach showed, she was told by a teach that she was obsene and made that teacher sick. My daughter was judged and harrased by this teacher because her shirt did not come all the way to the top of her jeans. However, cheerleads can wear skirts up to their butts and little tank like tops. The basketball players wear more than that. Letter have been written to Odell and Ward. They never reply. Wonder Why?

Get it right. The Jews did not kill Jesus. The Romans did not kill Jesus. God killed Jesus. Do you honestly believe that any human, politcal body could take that power from the almighty? The historical facts exist only in the physical realm. The battle was waged in the spiritual realm. God killed Jesus. It was the only way to fulfill the Mosaic law for all mankind, Jews and Gentiles.

Your view that the Bible and the Torah are men's opinions is an interesting opinion indeed. It would be much easier to take your views more seriously if you weren't so apparently a theological featherweight. Your selection of so-called "biblical contradictions" demonstrates an apparent ignorance regarding both their historical and literary context. It's akin to owning the idea of "the pursuit of happiness" without acknowledging the context of "all men." A proof-text serves only to prove the carelessness of the examiner. By the way, Deism is a contradiction in itself. The moment your pen hits the paper to formalize your beliefs, it has become organized religion. I guess you're just waiting for it to grow. Maybe one day it will be like Christianity. I suppose that would usher in neo-deism?

I like most of your analytical essays; but I dislike your judgemental stance on some things, for example; why do you call Neo-Paganism "harmless nonsense?" So you're saying we're all in fantasy land, we like to frolick around and pretend everything is all lovey-dovey? The only reason we like to dress up is because it makes us feel all cool and mystical, prance naked in the fields and dance with fairies!? Please, give us a break. Unless you've experienced something, or met someone who's into Paganism/Heathenism, what gives you the right to say "Oh, it's a load of bollux, they're a bunch of crazed weirdos who've been playing too much RPGs." Or something else along those lines, by the way, I know you didn't say *that* particular sentiment. Being in Wicca has opened my eyes to everything, I feel complete having a loving Goddess and God, and I feel invigorated every day of my life. I accept death, and other things that society likes to ignore, but I'm not obsessed by it (Just like saying "Fine. When it's my time, I'm ready to go". Maybe you're the ones who are into nonsense by ignoring things. Maybe some New Age stuff is... dubious, but Paganism, Heathenism (of any sort) and New Age are completely different. Pagans/Heathens embrace the darker side of life as well, like confronting your fear of death, etc, by being with the right Gods - most of us would be insulted by your blurring of New Age and Paganism. Some of us HATE the New age fluffy, unrealistic things - DONT confuse them. However, I liked your site.

To the american/western people: I am sorry that the tv aired your soldiers and especially the black american woman who looked extremely scared Let us pray that the Iraqis do not disgrace Islam further and can show the world how prisoners are treated in Islam Fairly, equally, fed, and kept in good health until there can be a negotiation by the enemy You either kill them or let them live under the beautiful Islamic laws - It was an honor to be taken prisoner in the time of our blessed Prophet Mohammad, (Peace and Blessings of Allah, SWT be Upon Him) Once again, I highly doubt that the Iraqi leadership will care anything about Islams ways (as it has been abandoned by all arab leaders) and will disgrace the world with some sick and twisted surprise or disposal with these prisoners I cared when seeing the black american woman who was extremely scare on the camera and she would not have felt that way if true Muslim soldiers held her prisoner but instead would respect her privacy and womanhood Unfortunately though, the american and western people are cowards to send women into war and to allow such things to happen To send women to such conflicts as Vietnam or any other war is criminal and the leaders of the west and isreal who allow such filith should be hung with their spines and all those liberated americans should join them when they are proud that their women are so free Either way, Muslims should represent themselves correctly and not treat anyone better or worst (with Islams laws) because they are part of a disgusting system this does not mean that you should not tell or expose how wrong and disgusting the other side is but simply not let hate interefere with Islams laws - We pray for the scared woman or women there and may she tell or return home safely, not to join some tough army (who do not care about her in the least) but to reax at home, and fulfill her wifely duties as she was intended to do from the beginning of life and I pray that she can return home safely to do that and survive to hopefully say, the Iraqi Muslims treated me very well but I highly doubt such words will come from her tongue

Mr. Matt Sutherland, what you choose to believe is up to you. It has nothing to do with Truth, however. It has no greater validity than any other "superstitious" view held by the others you criticise. Unless yo are able to support your belief with the most thorough logic and most irrefutable observations. In other words, don't just say: "I don't believe this or that". Or: "I believe this or that". Make reasoned, logical arguments and impartial, dispassionate observations as to why you think whatever you think. If you can't do this then allow others to continue, peacefully, thinking or believing whatever they like - and acting according to their beliefs and thoughts. They are no different from yourself. If you are fair you will agree this is so.

You sound like an adtheist. In which case you are no different - and perhaps even worse than the religious bigots you so criticise. Have the courage and wisdom to say "I do not know whether or not there is a God" - but do not make absolute pronouncements, or adopt firm views on something you are not qualified to pass judgement upon, in view of your limited knowledge - which is possibly inferior to those who do believe in God.

Once there lived a village of creatures along the bottom of a great crystal river. The current of the river swept silently over them all - young and old, rich and poor, good and evil, the current going its own way, knowing only its own crystal self. Each creature in its own manner clung tightly to the twigs and rocks at the river bottom, for clinging was their way of life, and resisting the current what each had learned from birth. But one creature said at last, 'I am tired of clinging. Though I cannot see it with my eyes, I trust that the current knows where it is going. I shall let go, and let it take me where it will. Clinging, I shall die of boredom.' The other creatures laughed and said, 'Fool! Let go, and that current you worship will throw you tumbled and smashed across the rocks, and you shall die quicker than boredom!' But the one heeded them not, and taking a breath did let go, and at once was tumbled and smashed by the current across the rocks. Yet in time, as the creature refused to cling again, the current lifted him free from the bottom, and he was bruised and hurt no more. And the creatures downstream, to whom he was a stranger, cried, 'See a miracle! A creature like ourselves, yet he flies! See the Messiah, come to save us all!' And the one carried in the current said, 'I am no more Messiah than you. The river delights to lift us free, if only we dare let go. Our true work is this voyage, this adventure.' But they cried the more, 'Saviour!' all the while clinging to the rocks, and when they looked again he was gone, and they were left alone making legends of a Saviour.

I just found your site and it was like all the windows and doors flew open and fresh air filled my lungs. I have all but given up on trying to make it here, I have been persecuted for being a non-Christian and I was suspended from my job yesterday for what they call "the safety of other workers". I have been called a devil worshiper and people have told the HR department they are afraid of me. All of this because I do not believe in a higher power the same way they do. I miss living out west and the open minds and hearts that seem to happy with life. I think I have worked my last day ever and I feel that the only way I'm going to make it here is on SSI. I wish there was a place where we could all get together and create our own community but I know what would happen to us if we did, look at all the places were people created alternative communities, Telluride CO. comes to mind. It was a small hippie hangout before the developers got to it, and what about Cougar Hot springs in Eugene OR? I remember when we just started creating those 7 pools and hanging out in the woods to soak in them. Now it cost you 3 buck for a day pass and they built hotel lodging and developed a campground there. No, I say we are all screwed. The best you can hope for is a crazy check and to suck the SSI tit and hope nobody finds your privet paradise.

I appreciate your need to respond to the inconsistencies and even abuses perpetrated in the name of religion. But the only way to get a clear understanding of the truth, and avoid "throwing out the baby with the bath water", is to answer this one question that Jesus asked Peter. Luke 9: 19They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life." 20"But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" Peter answered, "The Christ[1] of God." 21Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone. Footnotes 9:20 Or Messiah Who do you say Jesus is? That's the question that separates the truth from all the other voices out there. Fundamentalism interprets scripture literally based on our culture today. To interpret the Bible correctly, you need to understand the culture during both Old and New Testament times to understand the writers' intentions. For example, why did Jesus warn them to "Tell no one" about Him in this passage? As an aside, please don't put down Pat Robertson and Regent University unless you come here to visit and know us. We are not fundamentalists! Actually, there are students and faculty from all Christian backgrounds, including Catholic, who teach and study here. Freedom in academics is a reality here. Please contact me and come by for a visit, I would love to meet you. God bless, Frank

Hi, I came by clicking on a link from a friend. I came into the Trinity page. I think that was an excellent work, and it does not matter how many times I read arguments against the Trinity, everytime I do, I ask myself how come Trinitarians have to continue believing their fallacy. It is only part of another greater problem among Orthodoxy, the fallacy of 'God is illogical' or 'believe by faith.' With the idea that even if it is illogical, it is God's, you can believe anything you are told. This is a problem I have had to deal with for a while already, first with my Congregation, and second with people I come in contact with. Anyway, I just wanted to say that I enjoyed reading your article on the Trinity. Thank you!

I find it unfortunate that Ibn Warraq chooses to call the profoundly learned literary critic Edward Said a "literary terrorist." As a rationalist, I have welcomed Warraq's attempt to bring rationalism to bear on the Islamic faith. It is therefore all the more depressing he should engage in such inflammatory, emotive rhetoric in respect to his intellectual differences with Edward Said. A rationalist should be above ad hominem attacks and arbitrary labelling. There is much to agree and disagree with in Edward Said's writings. He is not a "terrorist" of any kind. Ibn Warraq should state his intellectual differences with Said in a dignified, rational way and analyse Said's statements and arguments in a spirit of objectivity and academic detachment. Tilting at "political correctness" and "multiculturalism" is ludicrous if one does not consider why such things arose in the first place. Ibn Warraq grossly oversimplifies Said's thought. I urge people to read Said closely and see what they agree, and disagree, with. This is absolutely necessary for all those who consider themselves rationalists. I strongly urge Ibn Warraq to reconsider his language in respect to Edward Said. One can disagree with Said without dangling such an ugly word as "terrorist" before the reader. And one can surely state one's academic and intellectual differences with an intellectual without engaging in ugly invective. This is surely a time we need more rationalism, not less. I suggest Ibn Warraq try to live up to his aspirations towards being a "rationalist." Greg Cameron.

First of all let me applaud your courage in deciding to let this entry appear which cannot have been an easy decision for you to make. However, I don't see that you have made any attempt at all to address my comments. I am not Zoroastrian, Buddhist, Hare-Krishnan, or any other thing that members of the various religious groupings are called. I am just someone interested in Cosmology and Cosmogony. As a scientist, I do not accept reports made about anything or anyone unless I can observe what is reported for myself. That does not stop me, in the meantime, from conceding that what is reported may be true if it is logically self-consistent. In other words, I am saying: be sceptical by all means - but not closed-minded. Throw away ALL dogma and investigate EVERYTHING you read or are told for yourself with ALL your faculties before pronouncing judgement as to whether it belongs to realm of truth or that of falsehood. It is not true simply because you choose to believe it. Neither is it false because you refuse to believe it. It matters not who has told you about it - however trustworthy. Even if it is Moses himself! Even if it is God Himself! Confirm again for yourself - INDEPENDENTLY - that it is true! That is what your God wants of you! You are not a mere robot but a living being! And therefore you must be personally responsible for whatever you believe - or you are nothing but a lifeless puppet! An automaton programmed by your Rabbi, parents or whoever else you choose to believe blindly and unquestioningly. Do you even realise that THIS is the most profound form of idolatry? If you do as I suggest you will find that you are in no position to make any pronouncement other than that of Mahatma Gandhi when asked if he thought Jesus was really the Son of God. He replied: "If He did and said what is reported about Him then He certainly was the Son of God." "By their works ye shall know them" for "A good tree does not bear bad fruit". Jesus' reported actions accorded precisely to the Will of God in Creation at all times. This is possible only for One Who is one and the same thing with this Will. Which Itself is One with God. "...The Word was with God, and the Word was God.". Sorry, I'm a Deist and not a Jew. I don't beleive Moses had any revelation at Sinai or the Bible or Torah are anything other then the opinions of their writers whomever they are.

In answer to your question, see the following new section on Zoroastrianism and Original Sin

Why did God not come come to earth as a man? I'm sure God can do whatever God wants, but God has no reason to come to earthas a man. Adam/Eve is not a historical event. Even if true, Original Sin doesn't exist in Judaism. Third, you can't prove Paul had visions from a dead Jesus.

We can't prove or disprove the Easter Bunny, but until you show me something more then some book written by mainly unknown writers making claims to what is more or less a form of occult, I will remain skeptical. I don't mean any of this as disrespect, thanks for your question.

I'd be obliged if you would tell me plainly - with logical arguments, and without quoting scripture at me mechanically - which in any case could not prove anything - why it is impossible for God to come to earth in any form He wants. Or is it that you imagine He must gain your permission first before He does. Your assertion that God never came to earth in human form seems to me so completely arrogant and illogical that I feel I must be missing something in what you have stated. Something, perchance, which you are assuming is blindingly obvious. I am NOT a member of any religious grouping but I am interested in Cosmology and Cosmogony. As I understand it, the Christian teaching regarding Jesus is that He Is the Living Personification and Embodiment of the Divine Word of God Which at one time found Expression in an earthly-human body (Incarnation) in other to fulfil Divine Promises here on earth made to mankind, out of The Divine Love of God. Judaism accepts that the same thing was already happening - albeit in a much weaker form - for millenia, prior to the earthly birth of Jesus, in the form of Prophets carrying Messages from God to mankind. All that happened in the case of Jesus was that the middle man was cut out, so to speak - as it was no longer necessary - and the Word expressed itself directly here on earth in the way that was most powerful and intelligible to mankind, in their condition at that time - hence manifesting outwardly as a human. But remaining inwardly what It was - The Divine Word of God. The resistance of Jews in general to this simple logical argument makes any dispassionate observer suspect that they dread the possibility of it being correct. Afterall I have never heard any of you come up with a single logical argument which demonstrates - even in the smallest way - that Jesus' Life on earth was anything but an exemplary one which demonstrated perfectly how God wants His humanity to be. All I have ever read and heard are either blank denials that He could possibly be Who He claimed to be - or base slanders against Him. Self-consistent logical reasoning, leading to the unavoidable conclusion that He was a charlatan is NEVER offered. Could you address this? Or, at least be honest enough to say you do not know whether indeed He was Divine or not. I hope you will have the courage and honesty to let everybody see this entry and your response to it.

Hello: I am writing to you from Kamiah, Idaho, where a new kind of American militia group has decided to pick up the pen rather than the sword. WATCHMEN ON THE WALL is a pro-constitutional, political advocacy group that is making waves here in Idaho County, and is beginning to build a network of like-minded Americans, who are concerned that the federal government is overstepping its bounds into state and local affairs. Led by the outspoken intellect of 40-something, Tom Simmons, WATCHMEN ON THE WALL is setting a new standard in the American patriot movement, by organizing peacefully and inspiring other Americans through its non-violent example. Of course, being a militia group in principle, WATCHMEN ON THE WALL is very controversial within the local area, because it keeps local politicians and the law on their toes. But the group itself is uniquely positioned to inspire more civic participation, and to keep the American flag flying no matter what. Visit the WATCHMEN ON THE WALL website at "thewatchmen.net" Tom is very outspoken about American political issues, and he's also a gifted patriotic singer, too! So, tell your friends about WATCHMEN ON THE WALL: an Idaho militia group that has taken up the pen rather than the sword. Thank you, Douglas Stambler Moscow, Idaho
