New York Racial Employment Gap Not Racism But Greed

Lewis Loflin

Update 2020: unemployment for blacks are at historic lows. I don't believe it myself. Being employed but unable to earn a living is partial unemployment.

Here in Tri-Cities Bristol Virginia our labor force has fallen by 20,000. We are mostly white and suffer the same outcome. L. Loflin

The race obsessed New York Times has again published more propaganda. This must be exposed. In this case they suggest that blacks and other selected minorities have higher unemployment rates than whites due to white racism. Whites gain jobs in New York while blacks, Asians, and Hispanics get pink slips.

Yet the white population in New York is in demographic collapse. This leaves wealthy white that can afford to live there. A flood of immigration half illegal has hurt blacks and the working poor of all races.

The answer is not white racism but greed. The relentless war on American labor. Loss of manufacturing jobs devastates New York blacks in the same way it does Appalachian whites. Racism and corruption the Times, the liberal New York City government, and political/social elites fully support.

It's also compounded for minorities by the mostly self-inflicted, multi-generational failure in black and established Hispanic communities. Those workers without advanced college degrees of all races are being systematically replaced by illegal labor, but all we discuss is racism.

Checking the facts before playing the race card:

In the first quarter of 2008, the rate of joblessness among blacks nationwide was 8.9 percent, compared with 4.8 percent for whites; in the first quarter of 2009, the rate for blacks had risen to 13.6 percent, while the rate for whites had gone to 8.2 percent.

Nationally the U.S. Census Bureau projects a labor force of 157 million in 2010. Going by 2005 stats, this is 70% white and 11% black. 70% of 157 million is 110 million, with a 8.2 percent unemployment rate equals 9 million unemployed whites. Blacks at 11% of 157 million is 17.27 million. With an unemployment rate of 13.6 percent equals 2.35 million. The reality is there's almost four unemployed whites competing against every black for every job, which doesn't even include Asians and Hispanics.

In New York City in 2000 the population is 27% Hispanic, 28% black, 11% Asian, 35% white. The City in reality has become third-world as one-third (2.9 million) of the population is foreign born. Of the foreign born 24.6% is Asian, 21.6% is European. (www.statemaster.com)

To quote www.nyc.gov:

In 2000, New York City had 2.9 million foreign-born residents, the largest number in its history. These immigrants have come from a multitude of nations that is unmatched by any other city...The importance of immigration in stabilizing New York City's population is only exceeded by the huge impact it has had on the city's racial and ethnic composition.

With the passage of the 1965 amendments to the Immigration and Nationality Act, the countries from which immigrants originated shifted from southern and eastern Europe to Latin America, Asia, and the Caribbean. As a result, New York City experienced a dramatic shift in its racial composition, from a population that was majority European to one where no group comprises a majority...

Latin Americans, in general, had low levels of socioeconomic attainment. But by having multiple workers in their households, Colombians, Ecuadorians, and Mexicans raised their household incomes, increasing the economic viability of their households. While educational attainment and earnings for nonhispanic Caribbean groups were below the city average, they had household incomes that were either close to the city median (Trinidadians, Haitians, and Jamaicans) or above the city median (for the Guyanese), thanks to their higher labor force participation.

(Europeans are the highest earners, Asians are all over the place.)

...Since immigration is heavily tied to kinship networks, a neighborhood that is home to immigrants tends to attract more recent entrants as well, resulting in ethnic enclaves...Immigration has radically reshaped the race/Hispanic composition of the city...

How many people are hidden in these "kinship networks" communities? In conclusion massive immigration has boosted the New York City population since the 1960s. almost 80% of the present foreign born are non-white, often unskilled, but hard working and have a high labor force participation. Whites are now a shrinking minority in the City.

Some extracts from: Job Losses Show Wider Racial Gap in New York July 13, 2009 New York Times. Their contention based on a report from the New York City comptroller's office:

Immigrants legal and illegal displace native born Blacks and Hispanics. This is not racism.

Unemployment among blacks in New York City has increased much faster than for whites, and the gap appears to be widening at an accelerating pace...the number of unemployed blacks in the city rose four times as fast...By the end of March, there were about 80,000 more unemployed blacks than whites, according to the report, even though there are roughly 1.5 million more whites than blacks here...

Economists said they were not certain why so many more blacks were losing their jobs in New York, especially when a large share of the layoffs in the city have been in fields where they are not well represented, like finance and professional services...African-Americans have been hit disproportionately hard...the city's overall unemployment rate hit a 12-year high of 9 percent in May.

The jobless rate for all blacks in the city rose to 14.7 percent in the first quarter, up from 5.7 percent in the first quarter of 2008. During the same period, the unemployment rate for white New Yorkers rose only moderately, to 3.7 percent from 3 percent...Among Hispanics, the rate rose to 9.3 percent in the first quarter of 2009 from 6.4 percent in the first quarter of 2008; among Asians and other ethnic classifications, the rate rose to 7.1 percent from 5.5 percent.

David R. Jones, president and chief executive of the Community Service Society says. "Low-wage workers and workers who lack skills are really getting hit hard. These are the workers who are sort of fungible. They lose their jobs very quickly, particularly in retail, the people who move boxes and do unskilled work. There are large numbers of African-Americans in that sector."

Manufacturing, which has shed more jobs than any other sector of the city's economy, had become a mainstay for black workers, Mr. Jones said. Government jobs had also become a prime source of solid, stable work for many blacks in the city, he added. But lately there have been cutbacks there, too, as falling tax revenue has forced the paring back of budgets.

James Parrott, the chief economist for the Fiscal Policy Institute, a liberal research group, pointed out that employment with the Postal Service in the city has declined by about 2,000 jobs, many of which were held by blacks. City officials have been wringing their hands about the mass firings that have occurred in high-paying industries like financial and legal services, consulting and publishing, but those cutbacks account for less than half of the 108,000-job decline since employment in the city peaked in August...

In comparing jobs data for the 12 months through April 30 with the previous one-year period...Mr. Parrott's analysis painted a stark picture of how uneven the effects have been for whites, blacks and members of other minorities. His figures show that whites gained about 130,000 jobs in the year that ended April 30 over the previous 12 months, but blacks, Hispanics and Asians all lost jobs during that period. Employment fell by about 17,000 jobs for blacks, 26,000 jobs for Hispanics and 18,000 for Asians and other ethnic groups, the data show.

Thus Mr. Parrott, the New York Times, and City Government hint it's white racism. They just won't hire minorities it seems. Even they admit blacks are the least skilled and occupy the most vulnerable industries to an economic slowdown, but still, it's just got to be racism. No it's the decline of government hiring based on race quotas while low-skill manufacturing jobs have also declined. All this leaves is low-end service jobs that have been swamped with cheap immigrant wage serfs.

It's Illegal Aliens, Not White Racism

Mayor Bloomberg says: "New York City Will Collapse Without Illegal Immigrants" (July 05, 2006 AP) To quote Michael Bloomberg at a Senate committee that met in San Diego,

"New York City is home to more than 3 million immigrants, and a half-million of them came to this country illegally. Although they broke the law by illegally crossing our borders ... our city's economy would be a shell of itself had they not, and it would collapse if they were deported. The same holds true for the nation."

That is why unskilled workers of all races, but in particular blacks, native born Hispanics, and those with only high school or less have been simply displaced by illegal aliens. Even the half-million Mr. Bloomberg admits to and like previous mayors has fostered and condoned in his sanctuary city, could be a gross understatement. The real number could be one million or more by 2013!

In a devastating 2005 report titled The Underground Labor Force Is Rising To The Surface January 3, 2005 from Bear-Stearns, they claim, "The size of this extra-legal segment of the population is significantly understated...the census estimates of undocumented immigrants may be capturing as little as half of the total undocumented population."

This has grossly "distorted" the U.S. economy in a number of ways. They note that "inflation has been artificially dampened by this seemingly endless supply of low-wage workers" and this has "reduced average annual earnings by approximately 4 to 6 percent." That loss of "annual earnings" is borne mostly by those that are unskilled and/or lack education.

The so-called "productivity miracle may be exaggerated" as the output of this illegal workforce is counted, but the real cost (inputs) is excluded. Most government planning and predictions must be revised because they are based on faulty information. And to quote, "An abrupt increase in employer enforcement could have a negative impact on GDP."

Another impact is artificially inflated housing prices, a major factor in the housing market collapse where unqualified minorities and illegal aliens were given loans under government pressure for "diversity" in home ownership while at the same time government economic policies destroyed the earning power of these very people. (My opinion.)

But why are they doing this and why derail any discussion with accusations of racism? The answer is simple according to Stearns:

The United States is simply hooked on cheap, illegal workers and deferring the costs of providing public services to these quasi-Americans. Illegal immigration has been America's way of competing with the low-wage forces of Asia and Latin America, and deserves more credit for the steroid-enhanced effect it has had on productivity, low inflation, housing starts, and retail sales.

And in this process they lower the standard of living of the working class to third world levels to compete with third world countries. This is destroying any hope of advancement for non-Asian minorities in this county. Because blacks and Hispanics just can't seem to be educated in our leftist school systems, they are being reduced to a permanent underclass as the very jobs they often fill are taken by this invisible illegal labor force. Stearns estimates there are at least five million illegal workers working for cash evading $35 billion in income taxes. Read the full report:

The Underground Labor Force Is Rising To The Surface

And just how big is this invisible illegal labor force? We can only guess. Maxine Margolis, author of An Invisible Minority: Brazilians in New York City claims the census recorded 9,200 Brazilians in New York City while the local Brazilian consulate estimated 100,000 Brazilians in New York City alone. There may be as much as a 10 to 1 difference between official estimates and the real world.

In these many ethnic neighborhoods in places such as New York City, how many illegal alien relatives of legal immigrants live in their apartments? Even the City itself acknowledges many of these immigrant households rely on multiple wage earners (at low pay) to make the household economically viable. And how many of those wage earners work off the books? To quote,

Employers also have incentive to hire undocumented workers off the books, taking advantages of inefficient immigration enforcement. The competitive winds of deflation from overseas labor markets have forced U.S. employers to find extra-legal, innovative ways to capitalize on sources of cheaper labor to stay competitive. These employers have, in turn, placed pressure on the government to ignore the flood of cheap labor...

And two other shocking factors we must look at is no growth in the number of private sector jobs from 1997 to 2007. Other reports claim as much as 80% of the "new jobs" created during that period went to "immigrants." (They never seem to sever legal from illegal.) Because of the jobs many whites hold in New York are difficult to replace with illegal labor, there was job growth of 130,000 the Times noted. But for those on the unskilled end of the economy, they are simply being replaced by illegal labor and have been for years.

And the same process even occurs in Bristol, Virginia where I live. Many low-end jobs in most companies are subcontracted out and are often filled with third-world "immigrants" many illegal. That includes at least four government projects I can document here in my community where whites are being locked out of jobs.

Extracts Two kinds of immigration by Andrew M. Sum and Paul E. Harrington October 16, 2006 Boston Globe. Andrew M. Sum is the director of the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University. Paul E. Harrington is associate director. To quote,

The overall effects of new immigrant inflows from 2000 to 2005 on American labor markets are unprecedented. Between 2000 and 2005, the total number of employed workers 16 and older in the nation increased by 4.8 million. Over the same time period, the number of new immigrants entering the nation and finding work was estimated to be 4.13 million. This means that new immigrants accounted for 86 percent of the total gain in employment that the nation experienced over the past five years. Our analysis suggests that close to two-thirds of these new immigrant arrivals were unauthorized. Among males, all of the net growth in employment between 2000 and 2005 was attributable to new immigrants...

Worse still, the impact of this displacement of native-born workers and established immigrants was concentrated among young people. The total number of native-born people ages 16 to 34 has increased over the past five years, while the number of these young people who reported being employed has fallen by 4.2 million. At the same time, the number of new immigrants ages 16 to 34 who found work between 2000 and 2005 increased by 2.7 million.

Available evidence shows that there has been a high rate of displacement of younger, native-born male workers and younger women without four-year college degrees by newer immigrants, especially undocumented immigrants ... Illegal immigration has also contributed to the growth of off-the-books jobs and the breakdown of American labor laws. Over the past five years, only one of every five additional workers in private-sector jobs in the United States has ended up on the formal payrolls of national private-sector employers, where payroll and income taxes are withheld and workers are protected by laws regarding workers' safety, health, and wages...

In conclusion it's time to stop allowing the ruling elite of this country to play the race card or hatching schemes to redistribute wealth, mostly to themselves. The best way to give the disadvantaged a chance is simply enforce the labor laws and cut-off immigration. It's time the Government stops aiding and abetting criminal behavior and allow the private-sector labor market to function properly.

Number of Illegal Immigrants Plunges by 1M. Department of Homeland Security Reports Sharp Drop in Undocumented Population, Renewing Divisive Debate

Feb. 11, 2010 (CBS) The number of illegal immigrants in the U.S. has dropped by nearly 1 million, renewing the debate over what to do with those still in the country, according to a Los Angeles Times report Thursday.

The Department of Homeland Security reported that illegal immigrant population dropped to 10.8 million in 2009 compared to 11.6 million in 2008. It was the second consecutive annual decline and the largest in at least three decades.

"This represents a sharp break from the past, when pretty much the illegal population has continually grown," Steven Camarota, of the Center for Immigration Studies, a Washington, D.C., think-tank that favors immigration restrictions, told the paper. "It shows illegal immigration is not inexorable."

Among illegal immigrant groups, the Chinese population dropped by the largest percentage - nearly 50 percent. Mexicans, the largest illegal immigrant population, dropped 380,000 to 6.65 million. Declines occurred in most parts of the country, though it increased in Georgia. Arizona, Florida, New Jersey and New York all saw double-digit drops.

Thus if we cut off jobs and benefits, most illegals will self-deport. Then we can deal with the rest. Posted July 21, 2010.
